I pretty much followed Susan Chong's directions to make these. I used Paperclay, an air-dry clay. I tried to roll it out to 1/4 inch, but but most are thinner than that and not even. I put VersaMark on my stamps to protect them and act as a release agent. I cleaned the stamps right after using them. The four shells are from a Judikins Cube; the other stamps are unknown (old, unmarked quilt stamps I bought on eBay). I worked on a craft sheet, and I put a bit of baby powder on the roller. You can also flatten the clay by hand. After stamping the clay, I cut out the shapes with an X-Acto knife. I slipped a fake credit card (received in the mail with ads) under them to protect the craft sheet. I also used fake credit cards to shape the squares. It took a couple of days for the Paperclay to dry completely. After they dried, I sanded the edges. You can also carve this stuff.

I used a variety of color media. The white one was colored with TomBow markers. The others were colored with various paints–Golden Fluid Acrylics, Lumiere, Adirondack Acrylic Paint Dabber (the citrus green one). One of the shells was colored with Alcohol Ink (latte). Then I used Rub-ons on most of them. I need to practice using them. I coated all but two of them with Judikins Diamond Glaze. The two largest shells were sprayed with a glossy fixative.

This was fun. I'll definitely do it again. Next time I'll drag out the stamps that I have that were expressly made for use with clay. They are very deeply etched. I hope you'll try this. If you don't want to wait for them to dry, the Paperclay website says you can dry them in the oven at 250 degrees for 30 minutes or until dry.

Daniel, does this qualify as using a stamp as a tool, in this case as a mold?

Thanks for looking. Daria
