Another one of my favorite LOs. I had the photo of myself (1981) and Sara (1997), so I took a recent photo of my boys for the page. I couldn't believe I had that much to write about a piece of furniture!
The gold chair has been in my family longer than I have. I asked mom the origin of the gold chair. She and dad bought it as part of their first living room set in 1969. Along with the gold chair came two red couches with black flowers, a heavy coffee table of dark oak, and two huge hexagonal end tables. She said it matched the other furniture. I’m not so sure.
The gold chair is the most comfortable chair in the universe. That may be saying a lot, but it is true. If you could sit in it, you would agree. Your head lays just right at the top, while your arms comfortably lay on the armrests. It reclines at the perfect angle so you can comfortably sleep or read. You can also swing your legs over the side to watch TV.
I have many memories of the gold chair. On New Year’s Day, my dad would spend all day watching football. He would haul the gold chair down to the family room because it was more comfortable than the couch. It was the best chair for eating endless snacks. Not that I could eat in the gold chair when I was a kid. Only adults could do that. On Christmas Day, my oldest brother Perry sat in it and opened presents. Maybe he got the most comfortable chair because he was the oldest child. As the youngest, I sat on the floor. I read endlessly sitting in the gold chair: Nancy Drew books, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Sweet Valley High series, and all the Wizard of Oz books.
During my second year of college, I moved out of the dorms and into a house with two other girls. We needed furniture. By then, my mom was happy to give me the gold chair. It had been in her house for over twenty years and the living room furniture was all being pitched for something more modern. The poor gold chair was beginning to show its age. The buttons were loose and the fabric on the armrests was almost completely worn off. But it was still as comfortable as ever.
The gold chair was now mine and it moved with me. I lived in three more residences before graduating from college. All my roommates thought it was the best chair ever. Many TV shows were watched and many beers were drunk in that chair. I graduated and the gold went into storage for three years while I moved back in with my parents. My mom was glad to see me, but not the gold chair.
I met Joe and we moved in together with his daughter Sara. We all lived together and Sara became the gold chair’s number one fan. She liked reading bedtime stories in it. Joe and I got married and we quickly had Calvin. I found another great use for the gold chair. When my newborn son was hungry at 2 am, I would take a big blanket and a Boppy pillow and sit in the gold chair to nurse. It was so comfortable I would often fall asleep in it. My second son Alex had many late night feedings in the gold chair too.
And now it is 2005. The gold chair is 36 years old and still as useful as ever. It sits in our family room. I read magazines in it when I have a few minutes to myself. My boys love the climb up to the top even though they know they should not. My mom comes over and shudders. You still have that old thing? Yes I do, and I hope to for many years to come.
