For the journaling challenge…

It’s a phrase heard often around our house. It started with Joal saying he finds *Good Americans* to join NWYC everyday. Good Americans are people who care about what’s going on in their government, beyond their front door. They vote. They stay involved and informed. They care about their fellow Americans. They are tax payers who want to see their money spent wisely by the government. They serve when needed. They know the names of their representatives and elected officials. They believe deeply in the liberties of America and equally in the responsibilities of being a Good American.

Good Americans come in all shapes and sizes, all colors and all religions and non-religions. They are part-time workers and business owners. They are men and women, young and old. They are held together by the belief that this is the greatest country on the planet because the people make it so.

Being a good American is not always an easy thing. It requires time, energy, thought, discernment, generosity, a willingness to take on the problems of others, compassion and dedication to humanity. Being a good American is not about rights. It’s about your responsibility. It’s about remembering and honoring the legacy that past Good Americans have left for you and it’s about doing the same for your children and future generations of Good Americans.

Being a Good American means pushing for changes when they are needed. It means sticking by traditions that have served us well. Good Americans are as concerned about the present as they are concerned about the future. It means being honorable in the face of dishonor and right in the face of wrong. It means giving more than you get and leading when the wind is in your face as much as when the wind is at your back. Being a Good American is about being strong but not arrogant. It’s about being bold but not brutal.

Good Americans are not made.
They are found.

Thanks for looking. ~~ Sarah
