I've spent the better part of the past year (when I'm not scrapping!) working on a book I'm writing about the history of the junior high I attended way back when… this story is the tragic events that unfolded in South Pasadena, California on May 6, 1940. Journaling reads: In what was arguably America's first school shooting, South Pasadena Junior High School Principal Verlin Spencer shot and killed 5 people, including the Superintendent of Schools George C. Bush, South Pasadena High School Principal John Aleman, and School District Business Manager Will Speers. He then wounded and paralyzed Secretary Dorothy Talbert.Mr.Spencer also mortally wounded 2 teachers from his own school, Miss Ruth Sturgeon, & Mr. Verner Vanderlip.Disgruntled over a possible demotion, Mr. Spencer used his competition 22caliber Colt to eliminate his enemies. After the shooting, he turned thegun on himself, but his wounds were not fatal.I wanted the layout to look like an old tabloid-style story. I made brushes out of the newspaper clippings from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and all photos are in my possession, courtesy of South Pasadena Junior High School.Birmingham, Birmingham Sans Serif, and Goudy Hundred fonts.
