I was so inspired by the May/June issue of Layers Magazine, and a featured artist, Clare Nicholas that I decided to try something different. (see http://altpick.com/news/4335#) [altpick.com]Journaling reads: When I look through my old family photos, I often feel a little off-kilter, like I'm looking through a dirty piece of old glass. I gaze at the faded, scratched images. I stare at the out-of-focus faces, and somehow I just can't stretch my imagination far enough to put life into the photos. The little boy in the tricycle is my Dad when he was about five years old, on the family farm in Northern Utah. I just can't quite place my Dad's grown-up face within the confines of that old photo. It might be almost any little boy, and not my own Daddy. The other photo is my Great Great Grandmother Emeline Kent, who died nearly 40 years before i was born. I know she had a hard life. I know she was alone in her little house for many many years. I know her house was on the property of her son, my Great Grandfather Henry Kent, and there are family stories about how the family took care of her, and how much they loved her. But the photos themselves do little to give me any insights into the woman she was. But I do think the more I learn about my family, the more their stories will meld together with the photos, until I see the whole picture, so to speak! I think my role in the family is to somehow bridge the gap between what we see and what we know, until the pictures come into sharp focus.August 19, 2010 Fonts: Antique Font, Old Typewriter Messy.
