I've scrapbooked about scrapbooking a couple of times in the past, so for this theme I wanted to create embodied why I scrapbook as opposed to talking about it directly.
I love scrapbooking because I love preserving memories. It's all about the fundamentals for me–I scrapbook because I have a horrible memory that will only get worse. I scrapbook because it is so much fun to look through my layouts with my husband. I scrapbook because I have lots of photos and I want to be able to see them in one place, with the stories that go with them.
But when you're always scrapbooking for assignments, it's easy to put that on a back burner. I grab my best pictures, not necessarily the ones I love the most. I write about the memories that fit the theme, not necessarily the ones I want most to remember. I've been focusing on the wrong things in my layouts–I want go get back to the right one–telling the stories I want most to remember.
There's been a lot of talk about the general malaise in the industry right now–apathy, bitterness, and a loss of that excitement we used to feel! I think, if you're one of the people feeling that dread when you look at your scrapping area, the only way to get back to the excitement is to forget about the pressure and stress and competitive nature of scrapbooking and get back to making layouts that make you happy.
For me, it's about layouts like this one. None of the photos are great–they're all just snapshots, but they remind me of the silliness of our Disney trip. While Nic and I went on a ride, my parents got a total kick out of taking sleeping Will around to all the characters. They wanted to see how many sleeping baby shots they could get. And that reminds me of the silliness we enjoyed when I was a kid at Disney World–my parents totally kicking back and being silly goofpots. This layout isn't about having award-winning pictures or a break-through design or technique, it was all about getting the photos and the story down on paper in the little time that I have to myself these days. Give yourself permission to make some layouts like that–they may not earn you pages of peanut praise, but they'll earn the smiles of your family.
Supplies: Anne Langlap's City Nights and Spice it Up Kits, here at 2peas
Instructions:
1. I changed the color of the patterned paper using the color replacement tool in Photoshop.
2. To create the title block, I typed “sleeping through” and “the magic of Disney” on two layers in white text, then lowered the opacity of the “sleeping through” layer.
