My son graduated from Basic Training!
Journaling under batallion photo reads: (the journal slipped out from behind the photo during scanning)

202 men marched onto the parade field, my eyes welled up with tears. I found it difficult to breathe, my heart pounded rapidly. To see Jon standing at attention, in dress uniform was a moment I will never forget. Where a boy once stood, there was now a man. My son.
When he came toward me, we embraced and I held onto him for what seemed like forever. The look in your eyes was so very different as well. Without saying a word, it seemed as if I knew everything you didn’t say. I was so very proud of him and sure that his father would have been so very proud as well.
Jon, that day will be forever etched in my memory as one of the best days of my life. The saddest day was when I had to take you back to the base the next day.
A rainy downpour, moments left before you had to be in your unit. No time to embrace you, no time to say all those things I wanted to say. Just the look in your eyes as you left the car. Your last words “ Thanks for everything, I love you guys…”
I love you more than you will ever know. I’m so very proud of the man you have become.
