Journaling: When we moved to Cyclone country, aka. the home of Iowa State University, I never dreamed that an actual cyclone would hit our home. And I’ve always said I wanted to see one, but I meant on the horizon, not on my house! Mom called just after Christopher awoke from his nap to say a storm was on the way to Ames. I answered in the basement where I was scrapbooking (of course) and Jeff heard the tornado sirens while she was still on the line. I hurriedly left to go collect all the humans and dogs and get back to the basement pronto. We could hear hail, wind, and rain, then it tapered. Jeff thought the storm was probably past, then it sounded like a sandblaster going at our house. From the corner of our basement we could see (through our egress window) what looked like all the mulch from our yard and a bunch of dirt flying around, then it was over as quickly as it had come. Jeff went up right away and looked around…we actually saw the funnel when it was wider/larger than it is in the pictures, but had to run back and get the camera. We lost siding off the east side of our house and a bunch of shingles. Neighbors lost windows, a garage, a fancy fort/swingset, etc. Then we went right back to the basement because more ugly clouds were coming. C got bored down there while we were talking to Dan’s, Mom, and Pauline. We went upstairs when the Doppler showed the storm was truly past. Abby’s dog run was broken in the storm and she was running loose in her yard, so we collected her until Scott and Jenny returned home around 11pm. We realized there is a good reason why we don’t have a large dog—she can actually reach the contents of the kitchen counter!
