Oh, what a terribly sad story. Yes, the world we live in now is so different from back then. People helped their neighbors when in need. I've heard that many times during my life. Love this vintage picture.
Ben is my GGF's brother, my Grand Uncle. Even some of my photos are not great, it's fun to see the family likenesses. Sad story, I found that in 1895 Ben's home burned while the family was in the fields working. This would have been a log cabin of course. Sarah his wife made it to the house first and was burned badly attempting to save their little baby girl which perished. When this happened, three of Ben's brothers including my Great-grandparents had ventured off to Texas and were not there to help him. They came back shortly afterwards. What I've learned is that neighbors would drop what they were doing, raise a house and send furniture and household goods, clothing, and basics without being asked. It was a different world. Thankfully, Sarah did survive being burned and had five more children.
