October 2014. Diwali, the festival of lights, an ancient Indian tradition, which celebrates the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. According to the Indian lunar calendar, it falls between October and November. The happiest of Indian holidays, is marked by traditional decorations, food and activities. Although the festivities last over a month, and may and may look a little different in different parts of India, five main days are at the heart of Diwali. each day is filled with rituals and rejoicing. Houses are decorated with torans (flowers)diyas (oil lamps) kandils ( paper lanterns) and rangolis (colorful designs at the entrances to houses). Music and fireworks fill the days and nights with joyous lights and sound. Like Christmas, Hanukkah and other holidays, gifts are an important part of Diwali and are given as tokens of love, respect and devotion between spouses and among siblings. Friends come together to share traditional foods and celebrate the happy spirit of the season. Journaling reads: I am so grateful to live in a multicultural community. We recently attended a Diwali presentation resplendent with magnificent costumes, song and dance. So happy to be part of it.
