One other tip to add as I do a lot of paper piecing myself - make more than one copy of your image. For the cupcake I would make at least 3 copies. This way as you cut your pattern pieces you can save them to make the item again.
My nephew is turning one, and Travis is turning two!
in the final version there is white acryllic paint and sparkle glitter onthe frosting...
instructions: choose papers you would like to use. I started with the cupcake bottom holding my trimmed image up to the yellow pp. I then trimmed the cake bottom off, holding the remainder up to my white cs. the candle was still attached until after I traced all of the frosting. I cut off the frosting leaving the candle, the flame. I held the candle shape up to my red cs and trimmed to the pattern. I held the flame up to the yellow pp and trimmed to the pattern. I cut a bit of black to make the wick. I then used a bit of blue pp to create the stripes. I used my glue stick to recreate the picture. Think of paper piecing as a paint by numbers. Instead of paint you are using paper.
