Love this page & photos and what a fun tradition...I grew up with the tradition that a man must be the first person to enter your house on New Year's day, it was bad luck if it was a women LOL.
Each Jan. 1st we receive our "First Foot". This is the tradition origin: "Quaaltagh The Isle of Man name for the 1st Foot, or the 1st person to enter a house on New Year’s Day. The 1st Foot is very important because he influences the fortune of the home for the coming year. If he’s an unlucky or ill-favoured person the family will suffer the consequences for the next 12 months. It is wise, therefore, to arrange for the 1st Foot to be a respectable person. He should bring, as gifts, a coin, a slice of bread, a lump of coal, and a dram of spirits. This will ensure prosperity, food, warmth, and good cheer during the New Year."
