For my mom's dance album...Like last year's ballet, where the title didn't fit the costume, this year's ballet the title doesn't fit any part of the dance. Going with the "America" theme, the studio owner decided to call the ballet "Kennedy Center Opera House" but we're actually dancing to music from the 25th Anniversary edition of "Les Miserables" (not the movie...my ballet instructor was pretty adamant about the fact he would NOT use anything where Russell Crowe was singing). As that's set in France--- and has little to do with America ---the title of the dance got changed. This is the first theatrical ballet for most of the girls I'm dancing with so they had a hard time understanding how the music connects to the story which connects to the steps which ties into how things have to get done. This led to a lot of the girls deciding they hated the music and the dance because they just thought it was corny. I didn't mind it so much since I'd done theatrical ballet before and I'm up for anything that doesn't force us into tutus and classical dances. This year, my class is dancing with a younger ballet class (my first year pointe students) and the younger girls have caused a lot of...issues...when it came to choreography. They wanted to do more stuff en pointe but most of them still have balance issues so the whole pointe piece is done with partners and that upset them. They wanted the whole pointe piece on their own but they weren't ready for it. They also didn't know (actually some of the people in my class didn't know either) that "Les Miserables" was a play and a book. Most of them thought it was just a movie and were very surprised to find out that it wasn't. Despite the fact this costume has skirt for days (it's very fluffy), it's a very nice costume and surprisingly NOT itchy at all!
