I've created this piece of art for our dear friend, Dawn, who is fighting breast cancer. It is, by far, the most challenging thing I've done to date. It is a mixed media piece. I started with K & Company Jubilee Designer Paper 12 x 12, determined the portion of the page I wanted to work with, and cut it to size, using my Silhouette Cameo. Next, I used Tim Holtz chevron THSO24 stencil (bottom left) and Simon Says Stencil Mosaic Heart (top right) and applied Ranger Texture Paste with a plastic knife (I don't have a pallet knife yet, and the plastic knife works just fine). On the heart, I immediately put pink embossing powder, carefully removing the excess. While the texture paste was drying, I cut out some flowers and leaves using my Silhouette Cameo again. Once the leaves were cut out of watercolor paper, I used a combination of Distress Ink sprays and water to achieve my desired colors. I dried them with my heating tool and quickly clear inked and clear embossed them. I chose where I wanted them, and used my Fineline Applicator Fine Tip Glue to adhere them. For the first kind of flower, I used a pretty textured pink cardstock for the back layer, and a clear vellum for the front layer. I used a paper piecing tool to create a pattern on each flower petal. Finally, I used a small dot of Perfect Pearl in the center to finish them off. Next, I cut out and shaped a white flower using shiny pearl finish card stock. When I shape my flowers, I like to curl each edge in a patterned direction I've created, using a wooden kabob stick. Again, I used my paper piercing tool to make a hole in the center, and chose a pearl heart shaped brad for the center.i had a few other flower embellishment pieces, so I put them together to make two more flowers, layering the three colors (pink, green, and blue), and finishing them off with a circular Pearl brad. The texture paste was dry now, so I placed the chevron stencil back over the dry paste and put paper on either side to protect the paper. I planned to spray with Various Inks and I only wanted to get the paste. I really like how it came out. I used Walnut Ink Eucalyptus, Distress Ink Vintage Photo, and Perfect Pearl Pewter. When that was done, I wanted to really make that pop, so I just took a Distress Marker and carefully drew a line around the border of it. My next step was to do some ink blending. I used a variety of Memento Inks with my Ranger Blending Tools and blended some really nice colors into different areas of my piece. I added three different flowers using black ink with black embossing powder and tied a little bow on each stem. I used perfect Pearl and stickles to make the pretty butterfly on the paper really stand out. Below the butterfly is a print out of a photo I took of flowers in a friend's garden. I clear inked and clear embossed it for a cool antique effect (I'm doing that a lot lately) and used a foam adhesive to make it a 3D effect. I had a few cute embellishment tags that said "life" and "With Love" and they fit the message I want Dawn to get so perfectly. My last, and most important, touch was that all important pink ribbon. We pray for her every day. I pray that this gift brings her joy and healing strength.
