This is for the Designer Diaries challenge. We were to right something of a secret that most people don't know about us. I took the challenge in a light hearted manner by telling an embarassing truth. I didn't have any pics of me cooking so I just picked one around that age and downloaded some cooking pics in the microsoft clipart and printed them on photo paper. love the look and it didn't cost me anything. I know it's long but I do hope you read the journaling coz that's where the heart of this page is. tfl
Journaling: I am going to be shameless and announce to the world that…. I didn’t learn how to cook until I was 19 years old. Of course I did hang out in our kitchen growing up watching my parents cook and sometimes I even helped chop ingredients for them but I really didn’t know how to put stuff together and make in into an edible dish. It’s embarrassing to note that my father is a Chef by profession, of all things, but I didn’t know how to saute, broil or marinate anything in my life. I did master frying though. I remember all through out high school, I fried eggs, hotdog, bacon and spam. Anything easy, fast and can be served with rice I can do, but to make a dish from scratch with ingredients other than a meat of some sort I was totally clueless. Until finally when I decided to be left behind in the Philippines to finish one more year of college, and only then did I realize that I needed to learn how to cook or else I’m either gonna be broke from going to restaurants and fast food places or go hungry with just water and crackers in the house. I didn’t even know how to pick fresh produce and meat. I had to find out that if the meat is pink in color that means its fresh and if the greens are not wilted that means its gonna be good.
I know it was naive and borderline stupid of me to not know all these while growing up but I honestly didn’t. All I cared about was to eat whatever was served to me. I didn’t bother finding out what’s in it let alone how to make it.
But now I’m proud to say that I CAN cook. With the help of “Rachel Ray- 30 minute” book, “4 ingredients” and “easy entertaining” cookbooks and “Kraft’s seasonal cookbook/magazine” I can whip up a mean breakfast burrito, lasagna, dozens of casseroles and the William’s special recipe of Beef Enchilada.
Finally I am able to serve my family healthy and scrumptious meals hot off the oven or stove. I would still need to look at a recipe card or book to make the meal but at least now I know what a spatula and a potato peeler is for.
