Saturday, March 21st, 2015 – The Captain woke us up at early this morning with an announcement that there would be a “suspicious boat alert” drill for crew members. We are in the Arabian Sea near the Gulf of Aden where the boat piracy activities are a risk. In 15 minutes we would hear a long tone followed by the words “Testing, Testing, Testing”.

Since this was only a crew drill, we were told to go about our normal activities but avoid the 3rd floor outside deck where most of the active physical training would take place and testing of the hoses. If we wanted to get breakfast we had to do so quickly because there would be no servers or workers in the dining room or Lido buffet. All crew members working in any of the food venues had to go to inside hallways and sit on the floor so we were advised to get our food before the drill started.

In case of a real emergency the cabin stewards would physically check every cabin to make sure no one was still inside. Once checked, an “evacuated” tag would be left on every door so other emergency crews wouldn't check the same cabins again. When there are crew drills the “evacuated” tags are only left on a few random doors even though the cabins aren't really checked. Today we found that our cabin had been tagged as training for the crew as were a few others along the hall.

To the right is the evacuation tag from our door. Below left is the 3rd floor deck with razor wire and hoses, lower right is the dining room crew sitting in the hallway on the 5th floor during the drill.
