I couldn't wait to go to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. This is the location of the cave thought to be the place where Mary gave birth to Jesus, the place where our newborn Savior was wrapped in swaddling clothing and placed in the manger - the place where the three wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The church is on the main level with wide, rounded stairs leading down to the cave I was so anxious to see.

There was a long line inside the church with people waiting to go down the stairs and into the cave. I was not surprised that there were so many who wanted to see this Holy site on the day before Easter.

However, my knee was really hurting by now and he knew I couldn't stand in line very long. We were surprised when we were ushered to the front of line and the ropes were lifted for us and we were allowed to go right in without waiting. It seems our guide had a lot of friends here!

It was tricky getting down the stairs to the cave – there were no handrails but Bill and our guide got on either side of me and helped me. Otherwise I'm not sure I could have made it (although I was determined and that counts for a lot!) – my knees were worn out after this busy day in Israel. We had walked so much and seen so much already today and it was still early afternoon!
