You gave such a great story here. I so want to see the contraption now! One wording suggestion: On the third to the last paragraph, change one of the "part" words to "section" in the sentence that currently reads: "... the middle part of the pavilion part of the market...".
Sounds like such a fun day! They have those same bicycles built-for-four with a surrey on top at the Jersey shore. Have ridden them on the boardwalk but not in traffic - that must have been a thrill!
Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 – Today was the last Italian port of this cruise. We've been to Civitavecchia, Italy, twice before so it was another, “What are we going to do today?” day. Most of the passengers went to Rome but we've spent enough time in Rome and didn't want to make the long trip for a half-day of sightseeing.
After walking around Civitavecchia for a while were walking back to the ship Bill when spotted an adorable bicycle with two seats in the front and two seats in the back and four sets of pedals – a bicycle-built-for-four with a surrey on top! Bill and I wanted to ride this bicycle but we wanted two friends to go with us. We were almost ready to give up trying to find anyone we knew to share the bicycle with us when Luis and Doris came around the corner and wanted to ride the bicycle as much as we did!
We agreed that Bill and I would take the front two seats for the first 30 minutes and then we would give Doris and Luis the front seats. We had a ball pedaling around and honking the two little bicycle horns mounted on front. Bill was behind the real steering wheel but the passenger side also had a steering wheel but it didn't control anything. Whenever we got tight in traffic (yes, we rode it with traffic on the city streets with all the hills), I found myself grabbing the fake steering wheel trying to get out of the way! Bill got a good laugh at that.
When we went down the hills and the bicycle picked up speed with traffic all around Bill kept yelling WOO HOO in a high pitch while laughing and I was laughing until my sides were hurting!
When we reached our first real hill we couldn't pedal up it no matter how hard we all pedaled. We all got out and Bill and Luis pushed the bicycle up the hill while Doris and I walked beside them taking pictures. When the street was level again we all got back on the bicycle. Going back down the hill we just took our feet off the pedals and coasted. Fortunately we had good breaks!
There was a market set up and we rode by it and even rode our bicycle-built-for-four through the middle of part of the pavilion part of the market although they were closing up for the day. It was fun to ride between the little stalls and around the tables of merchandise. We were drive-by shopping!
Halfway through the ride we gave Luis and Doris the front seat but I don't think Doris enjoyed the front seat at all! Bill and Luis teased her because without thinking, she kept grabbing the fake steering wheel just like I did.
I don't know when I've had so much fun or laughed so much as I did today when we were on that bicycle-built-for-four.
