Decided to change up the color scheme for this one. I am a little obsessed with those diecut barbed wires
On our second day in San Francisco we were planning on visiting Alcatraz. Unfortunately, tyler was violently ill the night before and ended up sleeping all day. I got to stay in the hotel room watching him sleep while Neil took Tristan, Lukas and Madison to Alcatraz. I told him to tale lots of pictures, which he did but very few of them had people in them! They all really enjoyed the ferry ride to the island. They got a nice view of the island and the city as the prisoners saw it.
Here are a few interesting things that they learned
*Al “Scarface” Capone helped inaugurate the new Federal Penitentiary in 1934 as one of its first prisoners. He was nicknamed “the wop with the mop” while on cleaning duty.
*On clear nights, inmates claimed they could hear the clang of cable cars and light chatter of evening cocktail parties in San Francisco.
*.During World War II, inmates made khakis, fatigues and cargo nets for the war effort.
*Contrary to the popular film released in 1962, Robert Shroud, known as the “Birdman of Alcatraz”, never kept any birds but he did publish two books on them.
1*Despite 14 attempts by 36 prisoners over 29 years, no one ever successfully escaped Alcatraz.
*.A $5 million repair bill, along with a well publicized escape attempt in 1962 lead Attorney General Robert Kennedy to close Alcatraz in 1963.
