Saturday, January 4th, 2014 – It's cruise day! We woke up in Pompano Beach as guests of Bruce and Miriam. After a nice breakfast we were on our way to the cruise terminal in Ft. Lauderdale where we boarded Holland America's MS Amsterdam! Our home for the next 113 days as we travel around the world!

As soon as we were on board we went to our cabin and were very pleasantly surprised to find our luggage had already been delivered and special cruise stationery was on our desk which had been printed for both of us with our names, our stateroom number and the logo for Holland America.

What is really exciting is that by complete coincidence our friend, Jan Beckmann, is also on this cruise. We met Jan on a cruise in 2009 and kept closely in touch with her and she even prepared dinner for us in her home when we visited Seattle in 2012. We have spent 89 days on cruise ships with her between our 3 previous cruises together!

Two months ago I received an email from Jan suggesting we take another cruise together. She had just booked a cabin on the World Cruise in January! She wanted to know if we might be interested in booking the same cruise! I couldn't type fast enough to tell her we were also booked on this cruise! We had booked it just the day before!

This will be our 4th long cruise together! (In 2009 – a 28 day cruise including Egypt, India and a day through the Suez canal, in 2011 – a 46 day Grand Asia-Australia, and in 2013 – a 15 day cruise from New Orleans to Civitavecchia, the port city for Rome.) Now we are booked to cruise around the world together – or at least part of the world; Jan will be disembarking in South Africa to go home.

Bill dropped me off at the cruise ship terminal returned an hour later after parking our van at Miriam's sister's house. By then I had already found Jan in the waiting area! Bill, being the sweetheart that he usually is, showed up with flowers for me and flowers for Jan! What a great time we had catching up with our friend!

Jan asked what table seating we had for dinner - she was assigned to table 125 but the strange thing – I was assigned to table 132 and Bill was assigned to table 133. Bill said that would have to be fixed, he wants us to have dinner at the same table! I told him to hold off correcting it until I see who they have me fixed up with for a dinner partner. He wasn't amused. Anyway, he said he would get it straightened out. Guess I'll never know who Holland America picked for me but truth is, I'd rather have Bill for a dinner partner than anyone else!

After dinner I met the person I hereby award the “Biggest Airhead on the Ship” award to. We were at the sail-away party and the ship had left the dock and was at least 30 minutes out to sea when a woman, I would estimate her to be in her mid-40's, beautiful hair and make-up walked up to me, smiled and said, “So are you going on this cruise?” The question was so stupid it caught me off guard and all I could do was sweetly smile back and say, “Yeah, I kinda thought I would stay on the ship.” I didn't want to point out the obvious to her but at this point, if I wasn't going on the cruise the only option would have been to jump off the ship, tread water and hope a boat came by to pick me up soon. She had obviously been drinking and I guess she didn't realize that the ship had left port and the dock was a small dot in the distance behind us.
