Saturday, January 25th, 2014 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILL!

Jan and I have been busy the past 2 weeks planning a surprise party for Bill in Jan's cabin. Because her cabin is so small only 2 other couples were invited for a total of 7 people counting the 3 of us.

Bill always runs around the ship in the daytime without me – to play chess, go to the pool and hot tub or sit in on lectures. Today he came back to our cabin and told me, “Jan is acting really funny today – I saw her outside her cabin and her arms were full of bags of stuff. I offered to take her key and open her door for her so she could go inside and she wouldn't let me. It was like she wanted me to go away.

Jan is on the same floor that we are so later the same thing happened again – Jan had more bags of stuff that she was taking into her cabin and she wouldn't let him help her, she acted like she was trying to get rid of him before she even opened her door. He said he just didn't understand – he thought she was mad at him.

Of course she didn't want him to see in her room because it was decorated for the party and if he had opened the door for her, he would have seen it. Also, she didn't want him helping with bags either when he ran into her in the hall because they were full of peanuts, cheese and crackers, glasses, as well as various things to drink. Nor did she want him hanging around because she was waiting for the cake to be delivered! He was so confused why Jan was acting so indifferent towards him and didn't seem happy to see him when he ran into her outside her cabin both times. He was really beginning to think he had done something to offend her or upset her.

Jan had invited us to her cabin for a birthday drink before dinner and that is all he expected so we were there promptly at 7:00. He was surprised to see the huge banner she made which was hanging on her wall which said, “Happy Birthday Bill”. On the table in her room was a beautiful chocolate cake with chocolate frosting which also said, “Happy Birthday Bill”. Jan had gotten a chef's hat and put letters on the front of it, “King William”. Bowls of Macadamia nuts and peanuts as well as platters of cheese and crackers were on the desk in her room.

After Bill sat down and was comfortable the other two couples came out of the bathroom (where they were hiding) to surprise him. I can't believe it but he was really surprised. It's a good thing it was early because we all laughed so much it would have bothered Jan's neighbors if the party had been later.

At 8:00PM we went to the dining room for dinner. Since we didn't cut Bill's cake while we were at Jan's, we took it to the dining room with us and shared it with the people at our table. The cake was wonderful – everyone loved it.

Bill wore his “King William” hat through dinner and for the rest of the evening!

Bill really enjoyed his birthday at sea today!
