After the dishes were cleared another card was set before each of us describing the wine and main course selections we would be served for the next course and the dessert was also listed.
When we got to the end of our meal a very handsome jewelry box was put before each of us – inside was a Delft pendant with the Holland America logo for me and Delft cuff links for Bill, also with the Holland America logo. Bill doesn't own a shirt with French cuffs and has no desire to so he is going to have his converted to lapel pins. (If I had a vote he would have a closet full of nice shirts with French cuffs – I love to see a man dressed like this but truly, Bill would be miserable!)
The evening was especially memorable because we were seated next to Henk Mensink, the Hotel Director for the entire ship (the Hotel Manager is the second highest-ranked person on the ship - only the Captain ranks above him) and we had a delightful evening getting to know him. I was surprised that we were the only people seated at the table with Henk but not disappointed! He brought plenty of fascinating stories that kept both Bill and me completely entertained for the duration of the meal.
I don't know if we will ever be selected for an evening like this again but it doesn't matter – this one time with all its elegance made for one evening that we will never forget.
