Friday, March 14th, 2014 – Today when we came back from lunch we found a letter on our bed to address the issue that we will soon be transiting through the Indian Ocean in an area with a reputation for ocean pirates.

The first part of the letter outlined what is being done to keep our ship safe. Our ship will be reporting to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) in Dubai which co-ordinates the coalition warships in the area assigned to anti-piracy operations. There are warships and AWACS monitoring us, radar is being closely watched, extra Security Guards will be rotating 24 hour anti-piracy watch, we have 4 Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs) manned and ready for immediate use and rigged razor wire now protect the freeboard deck where pirates would most logically try to board.

The next part of the tells us that if there is problem or even a suspected problem there will be one long ring of the ships alarm followed by an announcement, “Testing, Testing, Testing”.

Upon hearing the announcement we are all to go to inside halls and corridors and sit down. In case of a problem we will be moving at high speeds and some of the maneuvers may result in heeling of the ship – all generators will be on-line and we are capable of 25 knots.

We received a similar letter in 2009 on our cruise through the Suez and to India and Egypt and I remember the precautions that ship took then so this is not a surprise to us. For that one we were told to go to the casino where there were no exterior windows.
