Having laid down wax lines on a white egg (to preserve the color) with a KISTKA (Ukrainian word for the specialized wax applicator used in the art of Pysanky), I then used a sponge to apply the different dyes in a splotchy-but-blended pattern. I was trying to mimic a batik print, because BATIK is an Indonesian craft. (They call their wax applicator a Tjanting tool.)
