Friday, August 1st, 2014 – What a perfect day. I knew in minutes after arriving in port that I was going to fall in love with Scotland! We joined another couple for a taxi excursion for most of the day and had a ball! And as a nice bonus, the big SUV taxi had wifi for us so we were able to use the internet for the duration of our road trip to Loch Ness. This was nice because we hadn't had contact with anyone from home in 3 days.

As we were driving we passed a field with some strange creatures - they looked like cows with long hair. We got out to see them and noticed a sign that said the were Highland Cows.

Next we stopped at quaint little town called Beauly where we visited Beauly Prioriy which are awesome church ruins. There were even signs posted telling what the different areas were used for. We took quite a few pictures. If this is all we had seen all day, I would have gone back to the ship happy.

Monks of the reclusive Valliscaulian order founded this priory around 1230. Despite vows of poverty, the church betrays the wealth and power they had acquired.

The priory's name comes from its picturesque riverside setting. Beau lieu means 'bountiful place' in French. The Gaelic name for Beauly means 'place of the monks'.

As well as Latin, these buildings echoed with Gaelic, the language spoken by the local people.

The rules of the Valliscaulians:

"You shall observe silence. You shall not pass the outer grounds. You shall wear hair-shirts
next to your skin."
