DH drove me up from Bend to the start of the Cascades Lakes Scenic By-way and Mount Bachelor. It was a beautiful 18 mile drive. Because of the heat, huge thunderhead clouds were forming. We parked at the Summit Lift parking lot and walked around. DH just had to stand in the snow and worship the sun. I guess he missed Alaska more than I thought. At the edge of a stand of trees, a bird flew by me and landed on the ground like it was injured. It finally flew up into a tree and I discovered it was a female pine grosbeak. I'm guessing she had a nest close by and was trying to steer me away from it. The clouds were getting pretty dark so we headed back towards Bend. DH stopped at a scenic viewpoint and we hiked down the trail. Along the way, there were hundreds of caterpillars. He thinks they might be pine moth caterpillars. It was hard not to step on them. We got to the end and what a view of the Newberry Volcanos and the lava flow from 7,000 years ago. As we were dropping down the hill to go home, I took the photo of the road and discovered the moon was out. What a great day.
