Then we checked out our short-term living quarters for the next 4 or 5 days. Oh my! That is all I can say – Oh my! The nice view in the picture on the Airbnb website was correct – but only if press your nose against the window and kind of look out at an angle. Then the view is nice and looks like the picture. Or if you open the window and kind of hang our head out.

Our hostess was a middle-aged single woman who was very nice but very flaky. Shortly after we arrived we sat down on the couch with her and I asked her how long she had owned the condo. She just laughed and said the owner was overseas for a year. They aren't allowed to sublet but he was letting her sublet it anyway. They were just keeping it a secret.

I asked her if the owner put it on Airbnb when he was there. Again, she laughed and said he would be very upset if he knew she was doing this. If the condo association found out, he could be thrown out, and her along with him. We were staying in a condo we got through Airbnb, which nobody from Airbnb confirmed to see if the person renting it out even owned it or was authorized to rent it!

In this case, the owner was breaking his contract by subletting to her and she was illegally renting out a room! She went on to ask if we would please tell anyone we met in the elevator or at the pool or anywhere else on the property that we were friends of someone who lived here and we were just visiting but to be evasive about which unit number or who we were visiting. Not to let on that we rented it from Airbnb or that the man she was subletting from was out of the country because she wasn't supposed to be there either.

She went on to say that this program was working out great for her! She came to the Big Island with almost no money, or enough money to live for 2 or 3 months. She said she knew she couldn't afford the rent but told the owner she had plenty of money. At first she had no idea how she was going to pay the rent but after she moved in, she said she got the idea to rent the second bedroom out through Airbnb and she makes enough money to pay her rent every month. She was living in Hawaii for free almost!

Bill went to the car to get our luggage and then we were given the tour of the condo. She said to excuse all the chunks of plaster which have fallen down from the dining room ceiling. There had been a lot of water problems and that is why there are so many ceiling problems. She said the building was built in the early 70's and has not been renovated since. I totally believe her!

The wallpaper was peeling back in large sections and rolling at most of the seams, exposing bright teal blue paint which was probably put on the wall when the condo was built over 40 years ago. The wallpaper that was still managing to hang on the walls was completely yellowed with age.
