Another page from Day 3 of our Arizona trip.

Journaling reads: Our day started out great. We got up early, packed a few snacks and extra clothes (just in case) and by 7:00 AM we were on the road. We had allowed 5 hours to make the 3.5 hour trip from Seligman to Page Arizona where we would catch a boat tour that would take us up Lake Powell into Utah to Rainbow Bridge. Rainbow Bridge was one of the things Sarah had picked out that she REALLY wanted to do. Note to self: ALWAYS read the fine print when purchasing tickets online for an event in an unfamiliar area. So things went well for about the first two hours. Then, we noticed that most of the cars ahead of us (and behind us) were turning off to the right on this one side road. It should be stated here that there are only about three paved roads in Arizona! But, I checked my map that I'd printed out before leaving home and it indicated that we should continue straight ahead. So we did. Well, about an hour later we came to the end of the road … literally. I started digging in my bag of printed reservations and maps and soon discovered that we should have taken the turn off to the right (where everybody else was turning) because the road was closed just south of Page.
I felt just horrible! It was my fault… after all I was reading the map. We turned around and headed back, realizing that there was no way we could possibly get there in time to make our boat reservations (which had cost $375). So, this was when I began to have a major meltdown, and soon Sarah was right there with me. Jerry just calmly continued driving back toward the turn off, telling us that we'd work something out. After I regained my composure, I got on the phone and called the resort and told them what had happened. I just knew we'd probably have to eat the loss, but the man on the phone was so nice. He explained that he could switch our reservations to the cruise the following morning and that we'd like it better because it wouldn't be so hot. I quickly agreed and then realized that we had nowhere to sleep that night – driving back down to the cabin was NOT an option. He checked and found one available room for us at the resort (to the tune of $270). Although it was pricey, we snapped it up immediately – good thing we had packed those extra clothes and toiletries. In the end, it all worked out better than our original plans. We were able to do several extra things that day that we hadn't thought we'd have time to do. Sometimes it pays to miss the boat!

Thanks for looking!
