This is a picture of my youngest stepson last year. He’s a commercial fisherman and this was a huge herring roe haul. First they gather a certain kind of kelp and hang it on strings in a pool. Then they get the herring roe by putting out a big net, catching the fish live and then they drag the pool of live fish to where the kelp is hanging. They release the fish into the kelp beds and the fish lay their eggs on the kelp like they would naturally in the wild. Then the fish are released and the kelp is harvested and the eggs are sold. Sometimes they keep the eggs on the kelp and sometimes they don’t. This particular “haul” was a large and very profitable one. Oh and the area where we live is considered to produce the finest herring roe in the world – some costs more than the famous caviars!
