The New Power Generation store lasted only about a year in the early 90’s. The funky boutique offered records, T-shirts, Purple Rain condoms, and a new line of perfumes, or “pheromones,” each named by a Princely song title. The ’67 T-Bird from the LOVESEXY tour was parked between CD bins and clothing racks. Video monitors in the floor beamed rare footage, and a collection of gold and platinum records dotted the walls. For an extra fee, visitors gained access to an upstairs suite where rotating exhibits displayed tour costumes and the bike from Purple Rain.
Besides the purple door, the current store still has portraits of Prince painted on the sheetrock upstairs and his symbol on the basement floor.
