BIG RED BARN - Driving down the road today, a big red barn I see. I wondered at its story; about its history. Did it provide protection for the finest thoroughbreds? Secure within their separate stalls wherein they made their beds? Perhaps it was a dirt barn; home to Holstein cows. I’m guessing at the state of it, it doesn’t do that now. My mind can see a tractor there, idling on the side; The farmer tells his wife goodbye and to the fields he rides. He’ll mow the hay that fills the air with summers sweetest smell. It’s destined for the loft above; a fate I know so well. But it is not to be, this year. The sling is on the ground. Time has eaten at the rope till it has fallen down. The red is finally peeling; the doors are all caved in. The windows lost near all their panes and won’t be fixed again. I wipe a teardrop from my face and slowly turn away. It tears my heart to see this noble barn must die this way. I wrack my mind to find a way to save it from more harm, for tho’ I met it just today I love this big red barn. poem by David E Dunham, April 2010
