Life has an odd way of balancing itself out.

In August, I said a final farewell to my good riding horse, Dolce. She had health issues that had become too complicated to continue to treat, and it was just time to let go of her and send her on to God. I posted my last picture of her here in my recent layout titled "Window."

The day after I laid Dolce down, my former business partner called me and said, "Bonnie is coming home. You were always very attached to her. Do you want her back?"

Bonnie was one of our home bred babies from our second foal crop and from the moment she arrived in the world, she was my favorite. We sold her as a two-year-old to a man in New York who used her to trail ride. Period. Nothing fancy, and he never put a bit in her mouth. He didn't ask her to really do anything but be quiet and go down the trail without any fuss. No work on becoming "better" in terms of athleticism or collection or really even riding. Just go down the trail and be sweet - which was easy for her because her nature was always one of just being sweet.

So my immediate and easy answer was, "Absolutely!" I drove up to New York the first week of October to pick her up and bring her home. She'd not been in a trailer since she left my house 13 years previously, so it was a bit of a project reminding her that, "yes, you DO know how to do this..." but she's been easy to reteach that trailers are not horse eating monsters and that's no longer an issue.

Because her owner wasn't really a horse person, she's about the greenest BROKE horse ever, but my gosh does she try hard to make me happy. Almost everything I ask is new to her. Can you give me your attention? "I'll try." Can you bend here into my leg? "I'll try." Can you come onto the bit? "I'll try." No fuss. No argument. No worry. No anticipation. No complication. Just an easy and happy, "I'll try."

I learned so much from owning Dolce, and now I'm able to pass the lessons that I learned on to Bonnie. Last week - after only three lessons together - we showed in our first western dressage class. It was just an Intro Level test because she's still so very green, and it wasn't perfect by a long shot, but we had some very pretty moments. We won our class and got some great comments from our judge.

I thought that when I said good-bye to Dolce, my competitive days were over, but I'm beginning to think that this little mare might just be my new "once in a lifetime horse" because she's definitely giving me the most rewarding riding experience I've ever had.
