On the left, mid page, it says, ‘5 days no power' and ‘7 days no heat'. On the lower right I wrote, ‘I thought I was back in Indiana'.

I was going to do the following as hidden journaling because it would take up way to much room and have pictures, too. Now I'm thinking seriously about making this a two page LO with the second page as only journaling with maybe a few embellishments. I have never done a page with only journaling, so we'll see.

We live in Alabama. We seldom see snow and we scoff at the weather people when they say we are going to get some. I was born and raised in Indiana and Sherman Illinois so we have “seen” real snow and usually when ‘snow and frigid' weather is predicted here it seldom comes. I WILL NEVER laugh at the weather people again!

Last Friday (December 8, 2017) we got about 6-8 inches of snow – which would be no problem in the north. The south on the other hand has no snowplows, salt or sand trucks, etc. But really it didn't accumulate much on the roads but it was a very wet, heavy snow that did accumulate on all the trees. It was the best kind of snow for snowman making … and pulling down limbs. Pine trees especially cannot take the weight of the heavy snow and one limb fell on our power line with such force it took the meter box right off the wall.

The power company is not responsible for meter boxes or inside electrical lines so we had to get an electrician out after Alabama Power made sure there were no live wires. But first we had to get a permit before an electrician could begin any work. It was a nightmare to find an electrician with so many lines down and people in the same boat as us. Finally got one and once he was done, the repairs had to be inspected before Alabama Power would restore power. We finally got power back December 12th around 5:30 pm.

Our wonderful, sweet, amazing daughter took us in. She has a townhome and it is not handicap accessible … but it was warm! I cannot climb her stairs but she does have a small half bath on the main level. Our house got down to the low 50's so there was no choice but go to Amy's.

Five days later when power was finally restored we were able to return home, but the furnace would not stay on so it took another two days to get a repairman out for that. We had small heaters to warm the rooms up that we use the most.

The tree that caused our problem had another huge limb ready to come down. It wouldn't take much … a wind in just the right direction. So Sherman got a tree guy out to take care of that. Mr. Tree Guy said it would have come right down on the power line taking our power for sure and probably all the houses around us, too. Oh, goody!

It could have been worse and I keep telling myself that. We didn't have the destruction that hurricane floods do to a house; no tornado or fire that often destroys everything. We lost most of everything in the refrigerator and refrigerator freezer but only a small amount in the big upright freezer. No appliances were damaged.

These photos were taken on Saturday, December 9, 2017, late afternoon. The temperature had risen to the high 40s so there was some melting – snow was gone completely from the roads and probably half from the trees but still quite a bit on the ground.
