Journaling - After the war, the many red cedar trees brought prosperity as the Faber pencil company opened a wood mill here. Eagle Pencils set up a factory to make pencils which they exported to the world. Cedar Key became the second largest city in the state during the 1880s. However, within a few years the cedars had all been cut down. Then, in 1896, a devastating hurricane destroyed the town and docks.
Cedar Key today is a wonderful example of “old Florida” with historic buildings, beautiful views of the Gulf, access to some of the finest fishing waters, and a laid back attitude. Population as of 2016 was 706.
