Journaling - The A-10 Thunderbolt is a twin turbofan engine, straight wing jet aircraft designed for close air support of ground troops, attacking armored vehicles and tanks, and proving quick action support against enemy ground forces. The A-10 is affectionately called the “Warthog” for its aggressive look and is often painted with teeth on its nose cone. It is the USAF's primary low altitude close air support aircraft and is known for its excellent maneuverability at low air speeds and altitude.
A GAU-8 Avenger 30 mm Gatling gun is mounted on its nose and is a hydraulically driven seven-barrel rotary cannon designed specifically for the anti-tank role with a high rate of fire. The aircraft also carries air to surface missiles. The Warthog first flew in October 1975 and deliveries commenced March 1976.
