This journal is a project that I am still working on. I finished sewing my signatures yesterday and attached them to my cover. I was so excited about the way it is turning out that I thought I would share what I have done thus far. Moreover, my dear friend Laura was anxious to see what my coffee stained pages look like. I made the covers for the journal using strips of plaster gauze over cardboard. I then painted the cover. The next layer to be added was bees wax with damar resin (encaustic medium). After it was coated in wax I did some mark making in the wax. I then used some raw umber oil paint to fill the marks, nooks and crannies, etc. after wiping away the excess oil paint I Heated the surface with a heat gun to fuse the paint into the wax. I added some white oil paint to highlight some of the ripples and the area where I wanted to put my focal image. I added another layer of wax and pressed my image into the wax. The image was torn from rice paper by Ciao Bella. I added one more coat of wax over my Image and sealed it by heating.

The first photo shows the spine of the journal, back and front. I used butterscotch waxed linen to sew my signatures together with Coptic stitch.

The second photo show the page view of the journal. I alternated signatures with coffee stained paper and signatures of Ciao Bella Brocatto Estense scrapbook paper, to which I have added pockets and envelopes. I am in the process of finishing the pages adding lace, journal cards, tags, etc. I decided to post a pic of this side unfinished because I just love the look of the curly coffee stained pages unembellished. The color of the pages was the inspiration to use the Brocatto Estense paper because the blue looks beautiful with the coco brown. Note: my DH made most of my coffee stained papges for me as he was working in the kitchen.

This project was inspired by the work of Nellie Wortman. If you happened to see the journal I posted a few days ago you will note that the style of this journal is so completely different. This one feels like a book that a hobbit would own. I will post the finished journal in a few days.

Thanks for looking. I truly appreciate your comments.
