The last few times we've been to that area, we stayed in Civitavecchia rather than go into Rome. I would like to go to Rome again, but not for a few hours. I used to love Civitavecchia a lot more than I do now. Fort Michaelangelo used to be open to the public - no charge and you could just walk around. I loved going in the old fort! I had a favorite pastry shop - its gone. In the past we rented a 4-wheel bicycle for 4 - two people in the front and two in the back and four of us rode all over Civitavecchia. Now the city has declared them unsafe in traffic so they are illegal. When we go now, we just walk around a bit. Next time we go to Livorno, I doubt we try Pisa or Florence. Done those a couple time, and like you, we would just explore the area where the shuttle lets you off.
