Hi everyone! I usually try to post things in chronological order, but I am really anxious to post this one. I'm calling this a "Survival Cabinet". This is a gift I made for a friend who is dealing with chronic depression and the sad effects of getting older. I thought she needed a pick me up so I made her this little cabinet. I first heard of "Survival kits" way back in 2003 when I was going through my first cognitive therapy lessons. While they are really cute and novel at first, in the end they end up somehow being tacky after the novelty and charm wear off. It's gotten quite popular to put them together and place them in an attractive white bag; those are nice and the ones that are put together in a first aid kit are also charming, but I've never known anyone who ended up actually keeping theirs' long term. So while pondering what I should do for my friend Pat, I came across the survival kits once again and thought to myself "I wish there was a way to turn the novelty into something that would really last for a life time". I had a clear vision of this little cabinet with a shadow box inside containing all the cute little treasure with their endearing symbolism along with (what I think is a charming idea) the little hammer on the side under the sign "break in case of emergency". I am thrilled with the result and cannot wait to give it to her.

The cabinet itself is made from foam board and chipboard. In the future I will probably use balsa wood. I used gorilla wood glue to glue everything together. I used acetate for the faux glass. I wish I had taken pictures before I glued the acetate in place. I had trouble finding a paper pack that I really liked so in the end I settled on the Beach house Paper pack from paperstudio. It was the only thing that can close to the right color scheme I had in mind. The little nick-knacks are all things from my collection except the little power socket which is from prima. Also the bottles I made by hand. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Please feel free to take the idea and run with it if you wish!

Thank you so very much for looking!!!
