I just looked it up and it is indeed a sweet garden story! (I think a layout with ants on is required here)! 'The garden myth is that peonies need ants on them in order for the buds to open properly. This is not true. A peony bud will open just as well with or without the ants.'

I'm not sure that's true though its a cute story! peonies raised in hothouses for sale do not get ants on them as they're sprayed with insecticide!! I have lots of peonies in my garden but its the white irises which get completely plastered in ants!
