This page is of the citation my mom received from the Police Department when my dad was killed in the line of duty. The Citation reads: At 3:12 am on the morning of January 29, 1964, Donald Eugene Carpenter, an officer of the Austin, Texas Police Department came to the aid of his fellow officer, Bobby Neil Sides who had discovered a burglar in Dean's Drive Inn located at 1800 South Congress. Heedless of warning of Officer Sides that the man was coming out of the building, Officer Carpenter nevertheless left his patrol car to assist him. In doing so, he diverted the fire of the burglar from his partner and was himself struck down by a bullett wound in the head fired from inside the building. Officer Carpenter succumed at 8:45 am on the morning of January 30, 1964 from this injury. He thus made the supreme sacrifice in this couragrous demonstration of devotion to duty in the finest tradition of the police service. His courage, valor, and willingness to sacrifice his own life will serve always as an inspiration to the officers of the Austin Police Department who were privileged to serve with him. His selfless devotion to duty sheds fresh honor on the entire police department in their constant efforts to protect the lives and property of the residents of the City of Austin, Texas.
