I wanted to make a layout about my love for Japanese food (for the foodie challenge) and challenged myself to incorporate as many Japanese elements or icons as I could. Since I hardly had any Japanese or Oriental themed papers, I decided to use some Origami papers that one of my Japanese friends had gifted me a while back. I made simple origami paper fans as the main embellishments for my page. Then I dug into my stash and choose some papers inspired by the photo. I decided to make an artistic representation of a sushi roll as my backdrop for the paper fans and the photo. (The dark brown cardstock for the nori/seaweed layer, the white pp for the rice, the mint for cucumbers or avo and the orange for salmon etc). I hand drew, cut, paper pieced and hand stitched along the “sushi roll” in gold embroidery floss.

Since I didn’t want to take the attention away from all the Japanese elements on the layout, I decided to hide the journaling inside the sushi roll! I printed my journaling and scored a hinge on the patterned paper and stuck it behind the doily and “scrolly” border on the left. I inked all edges of the borders, papers etc to make them stand out a bit more.

I then matted the photo, used border punch, doily etc to highlight the top right embellishment cluster and photo. I used other Japanese elements like lanterns, lucky cat, happiness banner, sushi food stickers etc. I also tried to use lots of gold on this layout as red and gold are considered lucky colours in oriental cultures. I used gold alphas along the sushi edge as my title. The title is a play on words as both my hubby and I love Tempura!

I was very happy with how the layout turned out and hope you like it too. Thanks for looking and I appreciate all your comments, love and support.

Have a Wonderful day!
