Another Embassy (mom and dad) memory. In 1985, three Japanese astronauts (including, I think was, the first Japanese woman), who were candidates to join the US Challenger shuttle team, scheduled to launch in early 1988. Unfortunately, the 1986 shuttle launch ended in horrible tragedy. The 1988 launch was delayed indefinitely. Still, my parents were able to meet the astronauts some time in 1987 or 1988. Pictured is my mom with the youngest Japanese candidate, Takao Doi; the other picture is the team with US Ambassador Mansfield.
