Western salsify or Western goat's-beard, also known as 'Johnny-go-to-bed-at-noon' because its flowerheads open in dawn's morning sunshine and close with the noon sun unless it is a cloudy day. The bronzy colored seed head looks like a giant super-sized version of a dandelion's fluff. The single seeds remind me of the plastic whirligig disk from years ago that were shot from toy guns high into the air and then came spiraling back to the ground like little parachutes.
