August's full moon is known as the Full Sturgeon Moon. The North American fishing tribes are given credit for naming this moon since the sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain, were most readily caught during August.
Some Native American tribes knew August's full moon as the Full Red Moon for the reddish hue it often takes on as it rises through the summer haze.
The New World settlers who measured the year and seasons based on the crops and flowers commonly called this moon the Full Grain Moon.
Other names include the Green Corn Moon, signaling that the corn was nearly ready for harvest. The Wheat Cut Moon, Moon When All Things Ripen, Woodcutter's Moon, Mating Moon or Courting Moon, Chokeberry Moon, Barley Moon, and Blueberry Moon.
To the Cherokee, it is ''end of fruit month moon''. The Oto called it ''all the elk call moon''. The Lakota Sioux called it ''moon when the cherries turned black''. The Shawnee called it the Plum Moon. In the Pacific Northwest, the Haida called it the Salmon Moon. P8032747
