Murals have been painted in Mexico since before the Spanish conquest. Jose Angel de Signo painted the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Mexico, on the ceiling of the central nave. It measures 92 feet and is 881 square feet in area. It is the largest painting of the Virgin Mary in Mexico and some research indicated it is the largest in the world.
