Allow me to introduce you to Gillian. It is December 31, 1999 and she and her husband, Robert, along with the rest of the world, are celebrating the entrance of a new millennium! They have reservations, with a group of their friends, for a wonderful celebration. So many were worried that technology and automated systems would fail, but that was the furthest thing from her mind.
Christmas, they had hosted a beautiful dinner for family and friends. All week she received calls from those who attended thanking them for the presents and for the lovely day they spent at their home. This afternoon, when she arrived home from having her hair, manicure and pedicure done, her phone was ringing. She rushed to pick up the phone and when she said, “hello”, there was no response. She repeated “hello” a couple of times and hung up. Soon after the phone again rang. Again, she said, “hello”. After not receiving a response she asked, “is anyone there?” And then she heard an incredibly soft voice, a woman’s voice asking, “is this Gillian, is this Gillian Matthews from Torrey, Utah?” Gillian froze. When she regained her composure, she was about to close the phone, when the voice on the other end said, “please, don’t hang up!, please tell me if you are Gillian Matthews from Torrey, Utah.” Gillian could hear the woman’s voice cracking as she pleaded. “Please, I believe you are my mother, please don’t hang up.”
Her mind was racing. Torrey, the small, quiet town where she was born. Nothing much happened in Torrey till the summer months when the Cowboy Music and Poetry Festival arrived. She was 15 years old and with her best friend Delores, she went to the festival. They were listening to a young man singing, “You Were Always On My Mind” when he looked their way. Gillian thought he was the cutest boy she had ever seen. She was innocent and shy, and she quickly fell for his words that made her feel so pretty. When he moved on, he left her with so many emotions from sadness to anger, but nothing compared to the fear she felt when she realized she was pregnant. Her parents sent her away to have her baby and when she came home, she was not to ever speak of the baby she gave away.
How can this be happening …she never told anyone about this part of her past, not even Robert! She felt the guilt always and wondered if her little girl had a good life…if she was happy. When “You Are Always On My Mind” played on the radio, her eyes would still fill with tears. After all these years the thought of him still caused her to get emotional. Now she thought, I might be talking to my little girl, a daughter he never knew he fathered!
“Hello, are you there, please tell me, are you Gillian Matthews, did you have a baby girl twenty years ago at the Sister’s of Mercy Home?” “Hello, are you my mother?”

Thanks for stopping by.
