The beginning of our Big Bend Adventure.
Journaling: April 17th, 2018
I really wanted to get an early start this morning but it didn’t happen. We got on the road at 10:30 to drive to the park. We had not realized what a long drive it would be. Just to get to the western entrance was 20 miles from our RV Park but there was no Visitor’s Center there. We had to drive another 30 miles to get to the Center at Panther Junction which is the park’s headquarters!
Big Bend National Park is BIG! It encompasses 1,250 square miles – more than 800,000 acres - larger than the state of Rhode Island. It includes most of the Chihuahuan Desert and all of the Chisos Mountains. In fact, the park holds the distinction of being the only national park to include an entire mountain range. It is named for the great curve of the Rio Grande where by legend Pecos Bill lassoed a wild tornado and carved a series of magnificent river canyons in remote southwestern Texas.
No one comes to Big Bend NP by accident. It’s not en route to anywhere, and it’s an effort to just get there. It is tucked into this remote southwestern corner of Texas. It is also one of the least-visited national parks in the continental US. As we found out once you get here it is also a long drive to other sections of the park.
