Sheila, Judy, and Valerie
Allow me to introduce you to three remarkably close friends, Sheila, Judy, and Valerie. These young ladies have been friends since grammar school. From scraped knees, to broken hearts, they have been there for each other. After graduating from high school Sheila took all the secretarial skills she learned and secured a position at a law firm. She was beyond thrilled with her job. She would daydream of meeting a handsome attorney at the firm, who would sweep her off her feet, fall madly in love with her, they would marry, he would buy her a beautiful house with a white picket fence, she would quit working and become a housewife just like her mama and have a slew of children, just like her mama!!!!! Oh, how Sheila loved to daydream!!!!
Judy went to work in her dad’s real estate company as a receptionist. She really wanted to be a realtor, but in 1955, even with her dad owning the company, women realtors were frowned upon. So, she accepted the receptionist position, all along absorbing all the knowledge she could from the realtors who worked for the company as she was determined to prove her worth to her dad. And then there was Valerie.
Valerie, for as long as she could remember, wanted to be a nurse. Whenever the three would play as youngsters, Val had to be the nurse and Sheila and Judy would let her ‘listen’ to their hearts with her red and yellow plastic stethoscope. Valerie was in college and struggling. The courses were more difficult than she anticipated, but each time she felt like giving up, she pushed herself a bit more. And when she was ready to give up, Sheila or Judy would encourage her on. Valerie, besides going to college worked part time in Judy’s dad’s real estate office.
Sometimes they would get together, enjoy a couple of bottles of wine, and reminisce about the events of their shared lives. And the parts one would forget was surely filled in by one of the others. Their laughter could be heard out on the street. They genuinely loved one another and shared a mutual respect.
It was one of those nights that the thought of traveling to France came up! What a fabulous adventure that would be! They each had enough money saved up and their parents might be able to add to the kitty, they hoped! They began looking through brochures and realized that Bastille Day, France’s National Day was July 14th, that was Sheila’s birthday. What a fun celebration it would be to celebrate Sheila’s birthday with all of France!!!! And so from a fun evening enticed with the flow of Sauvignon Blanc, plans were made and before they knew it, it was July 12th and they landed in France’s Orly Airport and were on their way to the hotel where they would be staying.
The morning of July 14th they woke up and started the day off by singing happy birthday to Sheila over a breakfast of crepes and fresh fruit in their hotel room. They had a wonderful day planned, but Val was dealing with one of her awful headaches.
Sheila and Judy decided to explore the shops off the beaten path for souvenirs and allow Val to take her medication and rest. They would meet up later that day at 2 pm at the Café de Jardin de Fleurs that was located just down the avenue.
Val felt wonderful and so grateful that the medication and rest worked! Her headache was gone and after a long hot bath she dressed in her new white dress and her large brimmed red hat, an outfit she brought to wear on this special day, and she strolled to the café. She so looked forward to the planned festivities of the evening! Bastille Day was here! All of France was celebrating one of her best friend’s birthdays!
She was surprised that the girls were not there as she was a bit late. She had not realized how far the walk was from the hotel. By 3 pm she was a bit concerned that Judy and Sheila had not arrived yet. But knowing how they loved to shop, it did not surprise her that they got carried away and lost track of the time. She asked the waiter, with the help of her French dictionary if there was any message left for her, but there was not. By 4 pm she began to worry and by 6 pm she began to panic. Here she was, her only means of communicating was this little French dictionary; it was getting close to 7 pm; she was worried sick for the safety of her friends, and so very scared to be alone in this country where she did not know anyone. The gorgeous sunset, which glowed behind the Eiffel Tower, on any other night would have been breathtaking. Tonight, as the orange sky turned dark, Valerie was paralyzed with fear, fear of the unknown.
