The Full Harvest Moon usually happens in September, but every three years, it falls in October. October's full moon is typically called the Full Hunter's Moon. The Harvest Moon is an astronomical name and refers to the full moon that occurs closest to the Autumnal Equinox, which is around the 22nd or 23rd of September. Because September's full moon fell on the 2nd, it was too early to be near the Autumnal Equinox, so October's full moon, which occurred on the 1st, gets the name of the Full Harvest Moon this year instead.
Usually, the full moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for a few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon rises at nearly the same time each night, just 25 to 30 minutes later across the United States, and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. This bit of extra daylight allows farmers to work later by the light of the moon for a few days helping them to get their crops harvested.
October has two full moons this year, and the next one will happen on Halloween. When there are two full moons in the same calendar month, the second one is known as a ''Blue Moon'' or as will be the case this year, a Full ''Blue'' Hunter's Moon.
