Working on my DS's album for 2017. He sends me pictures - using dropbox or I take from FB. I have him do most of the journaling. Map from Internet and some of the factual info from there too.
Journaling: Cypress Island is the westernmost part of Skagit County, Washington and is about halfway between the mainland and offshore San Juan County. It is separated from Blakely Island to the west by Rosario Strait and from Guemes Island to the east by Bellingham Channel. The island has a land area of 5,500 acres or 8.6 sq miles and a population of 40 persons as of the 2000 United States Census.
The Washington Department of Natural Resources manages about 5,100 acres of the island and leaves the island in a natural state. Cypress is heavily forested and has a system of trails linking various parts of the island. In roughly the middle of the island is a lake of about 7 acres. On the southeastern corner of the island is a sheltered bay featuring a salmon fish farm. Cypress is not served by ferry and there are no public utilities on the island. The island is a popular destination for kayak trips due its relatively close proximity to the mainland and to the camping available at two sites on the east side.
During the 70’s and 80’s attempts were made to turn the island into a resort and golf course or condos and houses. Small land owners fought the proposals and when enough fuss was made the Department of Natural Resource (DNR) bought the areas and subsequent smaller purchases expanding the natural area. There are no single family lots and it cannot be built on. Even though you are in sight of Anacortes it still feels like a world away.
Friday June 16th 2017 we started on an epic 3 day adventure over land and sea! Ok it wasn’t like we were sailing to the new world but it was something we still talk about years later. This all started casually over a beer months before. Aaron, April and I were discussing kayaking to various places in the San Juan’s when we decided we should do a trip and so the planning began.
There was also the fact that Aaron needed a little practice. The month before the trip all 3 of us made a trip to La Conner so that Aaron could get some time in a boat. Aaron rented a boat from Bob Meade who owns La Connor Kayak and the practice went well. At the end Aaron bought a kayak from Bob Meade although the rudder is broken.
